Weller Soldering Equipment

Company History

Weller Soldering has been around since the 1940s, and in many places the company is still a household name. In 1970, Weller Soldering was acquired by Cooper Tools. The Weller brand name is well-respected and recognized throughout the world as a top manufacturer and distributer of high-quality soldering equipment, supplies, and related products.

Soldering Irons

The soldering iron is found throughout the world. This versatile tool has existed in one form or another for hundreds (if not thousands) of years.

Early soldering irons consisted of a piece of copper held in an iron holder. A wood handle insulated the user from the heat. These early irons were heated in a blacksmith’s fire. Once they were hot enough to melt solder — a mixture of lead and tin — they were used until cool, then reheated.

With the advent of electricity, electric soldering irons became indispensable.

Weller made its name selling electric soldering irons and related products in the mid-20th century.

Soldering Guns

Weller invented the soldering gun in the 1940s due to the demands of the burgeoning electronics industry for a more versatile tool than the typical pencil-grip soldering iron.

Soldering irons leave something to be desired when it comes to delicate electronic work. The spade-shaped tips which come standard on most soldering irons are too large and unwieldy to fit into the confined spaces found on circuit boards. And they can’t be made smaller because the heat produced at the tip is a function of the tip diameter.

Soldering guns, on the other hand, don’t rely solely on conduction to heat the tip. They produce more heat for a given wattage, and they are switchable: the pistol-grip and trigger makes the soldering gun easy to turn on and off. This, in turn, reduces the chance of fire or other accident.

Finally, many good quality soldering guns have an integrated light, so the work area receives plenty of illumination.

Soldering Stations

Weller’s soldering stations solve several common problems that confront hobbyists or professionals.

Soldering stations have lighted on/off switches so you always know, at a glance, if the iron is hot or not. Coupled with the control knob that varies the wattage supplied to the tip, this makes it easy to get just the heat you need, when you need it, for whatever type of soldering you do.

Most important, though, is the built-in stand which holds the iron safely and securely. With a soldering station, there’s no risk of fire or accidental burns.

Finally these stations provide a handy place to store all your small accessories, like the various soldering tips you’ll use during the course of your work.

Butane Soldering Irons

What do you do when you need heat instantly? When you’re in such a hurry that you can’t wait for your soldering iron to heat up, you need a butane soldering iron.

Butane soldering irons are easy to switch on, because they’re self-igniting. And when it’s time to turn them off, they cool down in moments.

Best of all, you can even use them for brazing, because they heat up to almost three times the temperature of traditional soldering irons.
